Un giorno la regina interrogando il suo specchio magico si sente rispondere che la più bella del reame non è più lei bensì Biancaneve. Verde d'invidia Grimilde ordina a un cacciatore di accompagnare la fanciulla nel bosco, di ucciderla e di portarle il suo cuore, ma l'uomo all'ultimo momento non si dimostra crudele quanto la matrigna e lascia scappare Biancaneve. Persasi nella foresta la principessa raggiunge una casetta deserta e disordinata che con molta buona volontà e con l'aiuto dei suoi amici animali decide di rimettere in ordine, sperando che i suoi occupanti, al loro ritorno, le permettano di restare.
I sette nani, cioè gli abitanti della casetta, una volta tornati dalla loro miniera di diamanti acconsentono ad ospitarla, avendo la fanciulla fatto breccia nel cuore di tutti loro con la sua dolcezza e bontà. Ma la regina dopo aver scoperto che Biancaneve è ancora viva decide di passare all'azione in prima persona e si tramuta in una orribile vecchia, dirigendosi quindi alla casetta dei nani con una mela avvelenata da regalare a Biancaneve.
L'ingenua ragazza accoglie la vecchia mentre i nani sono via e addenta la mela, cadendo in un sonno mortale. La perfida regina rimane però uccisa cadendo in un baratro mentre cerca di schiacciare con un masso i nani nel frattempo accorsi, avvisati dagli animali del bosco. Per Biancaneve però sembra troppo tardi: i nani nonostante tutto non se la sentono di seppellirla e la conservano in una bara di cristallo.
